00:00
Hey there I'm Emma from mmmEnglish!
00:04
Today you and I are going to do some conversation practice.
00:08
You're going to speak with me.
00:10
We're going to practise speaking together using a dialogue and it's
00:14
going to be a conversation between two friends,
00:18
two friends who haven't seen each other
00:19
in a little while so it's about catching up.
00:23
This is such a great conversation topic to practise.
00:26
I feel like it happens so often these days.
00:30
Inside my English speaking community, I have this conversation
00:33
all the time with friends that I haven't spoken to
00:37
in a few weeks or even a few months.
00:40
It's actually one of those conversations inside that community that
00:44
sparked the idea for this lesson.
00:46
But before we get into it, I want to teach you five useful
00:50
English expressions first and you can listen out for them
00:53
in the dialogue that we'll practise together, all right?
00:56
This lesson is going to be short and sweet so let's dive straight in!
01:06
Hey ladies!
01:07
Do you want to practise English in real conversations?
01:12
With really lovely speaking partners?

01:20
Hey Lady! is an online community for women.
01:23
We'll help you to meet new speaking partners and practise
01:26
real conversations in English.
01:29
We offer a free trial so that you can experience everything on offer
01:33

01:37
I've put the link down in the description below so that you can start
01:41
your free trial today.
01:43
There are five really common English expressions that I'm going to
01:47
teach you first before we practise speaking
01:50
together in our dialogue
01:51
and I want you to listen out for them because they're used
01:54
in context and we're going to talk together using them later on.
01:58
Are you ready?
01:59
Long time no see.
02:01
So this is an informal greeting, one that's used when you
02:06
haven't seen someone for a long time, it's been a long time
02:09
since you last met.
02:11
So you use it when you greet someone.
02:13
You say their name, you say hello
02:15
and then you use this expression.
02:19
Hi Steve! Long time no see!
02:22
Fancy seeing you here!
02:24
This is another really useful expression especially when you're
02:28
surprised to see someone
02:30
but it's a pleasant surprise like
02:33
you've run into them in a place where you didn't
02:35
expect to see them.
02:37
Now it is important to note that this expression can be used
02:41
with a sarcastic tone and
02:44
then it can mean the exact opposite.
02:47
Listen out, compare.
02:49
Fancy seeing you here!
02:53
So a friendly greeting would signal
02:55
a genuine expression of surprise when you meet someone
03:00
and that sarcastic tone is really to sort of
03:03
humiliate or mock someone or suggest that you're actually
03:07
not very excited to see them at all.
03:10
It's much more common to use it in the positive way
03:14
and that is how you'll hear it in today's conversation as well.
03:18
Listen out for the adjective promising.
03:21
If someone or something is promising, it seems likely
03:26
that it will be very good or very successful
03:30
and it's often used with some of these verbs like look,
03:34
seem,
03:35
sounds and feel.
03:38
So a situation feels or seems promising.
03:42
An idea sounds promising.
03:45
And the result looks promising.
03:49
A blessing in disguise.
03:52
This is a very useful idiom to know.
03:55
If you say that something is a blessing in disguise
03:59
then something that seems bad or unlucky at first
04:05
actually results in something being good or something
04:09
good happening later.
04:11
So it can be a really good one to use when someone shares
04:14
bad news like they just lost their job.
04:18
Then you can use this expression to suggest that even though
04:23
the situation is bad right now, it might become better in the future.
04:28
What's been happening in your world?
04:31
So this is just a really informal question to find out the latest
04:35
news about someone else's life
04:38
and it's usually used with someone who is a friend, they're very
04:41
familiar to you. It's not used in professional contacts at all.
04:46
Okay, it's time for you to speak with me out loud, okay?
04:51
We're gonna pretend that we are two friends catching up.
04:54
You'll say one line and then I'll say the next,
04:57
just like we would if we were having a real conversation together.
05:01
You and me.
05:03
So I'll start and you'll see your part of the conversation
05:07
appear up on screen and once we get through it,
05:10
once we complete the conversation, we'll swap places
05:14
and we'll practise it through one more time.
05:17
Make sure you listen up for those five natural English expressions
05:21
during our conversation too.
05:23
Ready?
05:24
Lauren? Long time no see!
05:38
Too long! Do you have a minute to grab a coffee?
05:45
So what's news? What's been happening?
05:59
I'm so sorry to hear that!
06:19
It's been a really tough time, hasn't it?
06:28
No? This sounds promising!
06:46
Don't tell me it turned out to be a blessing in disguise?
06:55
Oh Lauren! That's fantastic news!
07:17
Incredible! I'm so happy for you!
07:29
Okay so now we'll swap.
07:31
I'll be Lauren and you be me.
07:38
Emma! Fancy seeing you here!
07:41
It's been such a long time since we last caught up.
07:50
Sure, I'd love to!
07:57
Well actually, the last few months have been pretty tough
08:02
because I lost my job late last year.
08:08
Thank you. I was really discouraged for a while.
08:12
It was hard to be optimistic because there were
08:14
so many lockdowns and many people lost their jobs.
08:23
Yeah...
08:25
but it's not all bad news!
08:31
Well, after a month of feeling really sorry for myself,
08:36
I knew I had to change my mindset.
08:39
I needed to look for the positives.
08:48
Kind of! I've been training to be a life coach.
08:57
Thanks!
08:58
I know what it's like to feel stuck or like
09:02
important decisions in your life are being made by others.
09:06
I just want to help people take back control of their life.
09:14
Anyway, enough about me! What's been happening in your world?
09:19
Nice work!
09:20
I hope that you enjoyed practising with me like this today.

Emma and Lauren in this conversation.
09:56

09:57
Long time no see!
09:59
