00:00
Well hey there I'm Emma from mmmEnglish
00:04
and in today's lesson you're going to help me to pack my bags,
00:08
pack my suitcase because I'm travelling abroad.
00:12
I'm going on holidays.
00:14
In fact, my flight is tomorrow so this is serious.
00:17
We need to get this done.
00:19
I thought that I would pack my suitcase with you
00:22
so that I can talk about and introduce you to lots of interesting
00:26
vocabulary to do with travelling, to do with clothing and of course
00:32
packing, verbs for packing. There's lots of interesting words
00:35
to learn and to practise in this lesson.
00:38
In fact, I've created a word list and a complete transcript
00:42
of everything that I'm going  to talk about in this lesson
00:46
specifically so you can study these new words
00:49
but also so that you can see how I'm using them in context.
00:53
Maybe even try to use some of them yourself
00:56
when you're talking about your upcoming trips or travels
00:59
or adventures, wherever you're going, whatever you're doing.
01:02
Are you ready to help me pack? Let's go!
01:10
All right before we get started,
01:13
I'm going to tell you a little bit about my trip so that you can keep
01:16
all of it in mind as we're packing and I'm thinking about
01:19
the things that I'll need. Like I said, I'm flying out tomorrow.
01:23
Normally when I'm flying to Europe, I prefer to fly direct,
01:27
straight to London. There is a flight from Perth to London,
01:31
quite long. I think it takes about seventeen hours
01:34
but I'm the kind of person who likes to just get it over with.
01:37
Unfortunately that flight hasn't been reinstated since the pandemic
01:42
so I've got to go through Dubai.
01:45
So I'm flying to Lisbon
01:48
in Portugal via Dubai. I have a stopover in Dubai
01:53
just for a couple of hours, it's quite quick.
01:55
So I'll be flying through the night
01:57
hopefully getting a little bit of sleep, fingers crossed.
02:01
When I get to Lisbon I'm going to meet up with Shah
02:05
and our daughter Matilda and I'm very excited about that.
02:08
Currently, they're in London together and I'm meeting them
02:12
in Lisbon on Tuesday.
02:14
So we'll be together in Lisbon for a week.
02:16
The main reason why we are going to Lisbon is because
02:20
we have tickets to a Kings of Convenience concert
02:25
at the Coliseum in Lisbon,
02:28
something that we've been looking forward to for a long time.
02:32
We bought tickets early in the pandemic
02:35
knowing that it was going to take a little while for us
02:37
to be able to be there together and to do that.
02:40
That is happening on Wednesday,
02:42
not long after I arrive and then we're going to spend a few days
02:46
exploring Lisbon, it's an incredible city, beautiful city
02:50
but then we're also going to spend the weekend in Sintra
02:53
which is new for me. I haven't been there.
02:56
Then together we're going to fly to Italy and we'll fly into Florence.
03:02
Florence has never been super high on my bucket list
03:06
however the more that I'm looking into it, the more that I'm reading
03:09
about Florence and Tuscany and Italy, the more excited I'm getting
03:14
about the architecture, the museums, the incredible masterpieces
03:19
that you can see there in all of the galleries and museums.
03:23
So I'm looking forward to it. We're spending a couple of
03:25
days in Florence before we catch the train to Pisa.
03:29
For any of you who know that famous leaning tower of Pisa,
03:34
that is exactly where we're going but more excitingly,
03:37
the reason we are going to Pisa is because we have a fantastic
03:43
amazing event that we are hosting in Pisa for all of the members
03:48
of the Hey Lady! community.
03:50
Hey Lady! is my community for women learning English.
03:54
It's an incredible space to build confidence and speaking skills,
03:59
conversation skills and we do that all through our online platform.
04:03
So all of us are very used to meeting and hanging out
04:07
with each other online all the time, for years.
04:12
This is a very special in-person event and so there are
04:17
members from our community coming from around Italy,
04:20
from around Europe and even flying in from different continents
04:25
and different countries.
04:26
It's going to be amazing! I can't wait.
04:29
So that's why we're going to be in Pisa. Then from Pisa,
04:32
we'll catch a train down to Naples and I'm really looking forward
04:37
to that part of the trip.
04:39
Naples or Napoli is home to pizza, the home of pizza.
04:46
I don't care where you are in the world, I know we all think that
04:48
pizza is ours. Pizza belongs to Napoli and of course,
04:54
naturally we are gonna do a pizza-making course in Napoli
04:58
just to make sure we're doing it right.
05:00
We've got the perfect technique.
05:02
There's incredible national parks that I want to go hiking in,
05:05
amazing historical sites like Pompeii.
05:09
I would love to go exploring through Pompeii.
05:12
The Amalfi coast and all of those incredibly beautiful coastal
05:16
villages so I wanted to give you all the context of that trip
05:20
to help you see what I need to pack and why.
05:24
I've been looking at the weather it's going to be about
05:26
twenty-five degrees
05:28
most of the time, so quite pleasant, a good time to travel
05:32
but also I feel like I need to be prepared for anything.
05:36
It can be a little bit rainy particularly in Italy around that time
05:40
so I need to be prepared for that. As you heard, there's
05:44
hiking and adventure activities and things like that,
05:47
lots of walking so I need comfortable clothes to do that in
05:51
but you also heard me say that this is part business trip as well.
05:55
Lots of things to think about, not a lot of space to pack things into
06:00
so it's going to be a bit of a challenge.
06:02
Let's get into it!
06:08
Okay so I'm gonna start bringing out all of the different bits of
06:14
clothing that I'm gonna put in to that side and explain them as I go.
06:20
So I've got a few pairs of pants that I'm going to take,
06:23
always take a pair of jeans or I do.
06:26
Can't go anywhere without them.
06:28
I've got a second pair as well
06:31
sort of don't look like jeans, they're jeans material
06:34
and they're sort of patterned, they're like wide-leg as well,
06:37
the other one's a skinny-leg. Good to have options.
06:41
You'll see that my method of folding is not too precise.
06:45
I think some of you might be having
06:47
heart palpitations watching me
06:49
just shoving things in my suitcase. This is how it is.
06:54
An essential in my suitcase is a jumpsuit.
06:58
So comfy, easy to throw on, easy to dress up, dress down.
07:05
The other essential piece from my wardrobe is culottes.
07:10
It looks like a skirt when you're wearing it but it's a pair of
07:14
baggy pants. I absolutely love these because I can easily
07:19
dress them up with a pair of heels or some sandals
07:24
and I can dress them down with some sneakers or some
07:27
thongs.
07:29
Australian thongs everyone, jeez.
07:32
All right and a couple of brightly coloured little pieces
07:36
so I've got a skirt that I'm gonna take.
07:38
This dress is new, it's from one of my favourite brands Gorman.
07:43
I think that I'm going to wear this at our event in Pisa.
07:47
I haven't really got shoes to wear with it though so
07:52
I'm still thinking about what to do there but I'm definitely taking it,
07:56
it's really good and I think it'll travel well because it's just cotton
08:00
so it's unlike the jumpsuit, it's not going to get too creased
08:04
even with my method of folding.
08:07
Another cute little addition that I've got to throw in is
08:12
this set of shorts with a top that goes with it.
08:18
I really like having the flexibility of being able to dress something
08:23
up or down and so you'll see that in my wardrobe,
08:28
mostly it's full of really comfortable things that you know you can
08:34
add a pair of heels or some earrings or something to dress it up.
08:39
It becomes very flexible.
08:41
What else?
08:42
Okay I've got a - what do we call this?
08:46
Skivvy.
08:47
A skivvy. What else, maybe like a turtleneck?
08:50
It might be called?
08:51
A long sleeve shirt with a neck covering and it's a little bit
08:56
cropped as well. Most of my pants are high-waisted
08:59
so most of my tops are cropped
09:02
but what I'm hoping is that just in case it gets a little cold
09:07
I should be able to wear this skivvy with
09:10
a few different things that I've got in here and I think that will
09:13
save me if there are a couple of nights that get chilly.
09:16
I've got a couple of t-shirts to throw in.
09:20
You guys know from all of my videos including this one,
09:23
that I love just wearing black. This is a singlet,
09:27
always need to have that. I've got one in beige and I've got all nude.
09:32
Perhaps we call that and I've got a black one so all bases covered.
09:38
All right I've got a few more
09:40
options for tops and things as well so I've got nude or black.
09:47
Ideally I don't want to be doing washing while I'm away so
09:51
I'm hoping that I can take... I'm probably going to have to do it.
09:58
And a little lightweight jumper as well that I can
10:02
easily throw in my bag or sort of throw around my shoulders
10:06
if it gets a little chilly.
10:09
So that's that. Getting pretty full over there.
10:13
One thing that I'm really not sure about, warmth,
10:18
because like I said earlier,
10:19
it's between seasons, it's going to be about
10:22
twenty-five which should be really comfortable but I'm sure
10:26
there's going to be a couple of days where it's
10:28
cooler and a couple of days where it's warmer
10:30
and probably a little bit of rain as well so I think it's a good idea
10:35
to throw in my rain jacket. It folds down to such a small size.
10:45
I don't want to be caught in the rain.
10:47
So then I've got to decide between my trusty leather jacket.
10:51
This I have had,
10:54
gosh it's fifteen years or more.
10:57
It is the best purchase that I've ever made
11:02
and I love it, probably the one that I should go with.
11:06
I really love this one.
11:08
At the moment in Australia, we're heading into winter
11:12
and it's starting to get a bit cold and this is a down jacket
11:15
so it's full of feathers. So warm. I don't want to be cold
11:20
but as you can see it's pretty bulky.
11:23
Either way, I'm going to wear, whatever jacket I choose
11:26
I'm going to wear it on the plane right so
11:29
technically I don't need to decide this right now.
11:32
Let me know what you think. What should I do?
11:35
The other thing that is absolutely essential is activewear
11:40
so activewear is kind of
11:42
kind of what I'm wearing now leggings and a comfortable
11:46
stretchy top. I've got my runners on as well.
11:50
All of this I think I'm going to pack and bring.
11:53
I'm also going to throw in some bike shorts
11:55
in case I want to go for a run, a sports bra
11:59
and yeah my workout clothes.
12:01
So what else do I need?
12:03
Oh socks and undies.
12:05
Undies is a really Australian word.
12:08
I think undies is short for underpants or underwear.
12:12
I want to try and take as many pairs as I can so I don't have
12:16
to do washing. I'm going to throw in a couple of pairs of socks,
12:20
some sports socks and some other socks,
12:24
probably take these on the plane, actually.
12:29
All right my togs. I just realised togs is probably a really Australian,
12:36
probably even Victorian which is the state where I'm
12:39
from, where I grew up, it's not a very commonly used word.
12:42
Togs are swimmers, bathers, bikinis,
12:47
swimming costume, there are so many words for this.
12:50
Swimmers and bathers are probably the most common
12:53
and I'm just wondering whether I need to take two pairs.
12:56
These are both almost identical. I love this brand, Fella.
13:00
They are amazing, very flattering. I know it's gonna be warm,
13:04
I don't know if it's going to be swimming every day kind of weather,
13:08
maybe not but I don't want to be stuck.
13:12
I might take both. Optimistically I'll take both.
13:16
All right and the shoes, right?
13:18
Shoes are probably the hardest thing for me to pack.
13:22
I'm going to take some street shoes.
13:24
They can go with everything which is handy.
13:28
I'm going to take my Birkies, my Birkenstocks.
13:31
In Australia, we shorten that to Birkies,
13:33
don't know if everyone else does, do you?
13:37
Anyway I wouldn't go anywhere without them.
13:39
I will probably wear those ninety per cent of the time and then
13:45
when I have to put something else on.
13:48
Okay so that's that. I do need something that's a little more dressy
13:53
right? I am going to take my runners like I said.
13:55
Either I'll wear them on the plane or I'll wear my street shoes
13:58
on the plane.
14:00
You know when I say I need something a little more dressy,
14:03
remember that a little part of this trip is
14:07
a business trip right, we're meeting my students, my clients,
14:11
we have an amazing event. I don't know if I want to take heels
14:16
or I want to take sandals. I don't wear heels that much
14:20
and it's not a super formal event
14:23
and I can't see myself wearing them at
14:25
any other point on the whole trip so I think I might
14:31
leave them and opt for the sandals instead.
14:34
They're like just slightly dressier than my Birkies
14:37
so I might wear those.
14:39
Sorry to disappoint any of you who thought I had better taste
14:42
in shoes but unfortunately not.
14:46
So some of the other things I need to take,
14:49
ladies you understand, right?
14:51
That packing a suitcase, half of it is just not even clothes
14:57
so I've got my hair straightener and
14:59
my hair dryer which are essential.
15:04
Let me just pop that off, slip that in there.
15:08
Toiletries. Toiletries are well it's the collective noun that we use for
15:14
anything that comes from the bathroom
15:16
so makeup, shampoo, toothbrush.
15:20
Let's actually just go through it.
15:22
So deodorant, very important. This is roll-on deodorant
15:26
but you can also get spray. I've got oh gosh quite a few different
15:30
moisturisers, hand moisturisers, night cream, day cream,
15:36
you know what it's like.
15:37
I've got my cleanser, a hairbrush
15:41
a comb, essential for
15:45
my fringe.
15:46
Some people are you know fifty-fifty on these,
15:49
whether or not they like them. I really love them for just
15:52
throwing your hair back, butterfly clip.
15:54
Toothbrush, toothpaste,
15:58
dental floss and a couple of other essential items like band-aids,
16:05
always try and remember these when you're doing a lot of walking
16:08
in case you get blisters,
16:11
Panadol, Nurofens, pain relief.
16:15
Hair ties or elastics, hair elastics, hair lackey.
16:21
There are so many words for these little things,
16:24
so many words I wish that there was an endless supply of them
16:27
but they always seem to go missing.
16:30
Always remember to take a few.
16:32
So that's that and now we've got my makeup case.
16:36
Now my makeup case when I travel, I try to travel as lightly
16:40
as possible so I've got
16:43
my foundation, I've got my powder, my rouge,
16:49
eyeshadow and eyeshadow brush,
16:54
mascara.
16:57
My lip liner
17:00
and a couple of lipsticks, couple of options not too many options
17:04
but honestly, I really try and keep it light if I can.
17:09
That's my makeup case, what else?
17:13
I mean this side's pretty full now.
17:16
Can you think of anything I'm missing?
17:19
I try to take one, if not two, like canvas tote bags
17:24
because they're so handy. Canvas is the material that this is
17:28
so yeah just a tote bag and I've got a thousand of them.
17:32
Maybe I'll put my shoes in it
17:33
just to protect them while I'm travelling.
17:36
Also be a beach bag you know if we end up going to the beach
17:40
or shopping so I don't have to use plastic bags.
17:44
All of that stuff so really useful, I always try to pack at least one
17:48
if not two. What else?
17:50
I haven't put my shampoo or conditioner in yet.
17:53
Do you know what? I think that's it. I think I'm done.
17:56
So I feel pretty confident that I've got most of the things that I need
18:00
in here. The things that I'm missing I'm probably going to put in
18:03
my cabin bag, my laptop, any cables and chargers, my phone,
18:09
book to read, notebook to write in.
18:12
All of that stuff will go in my cabin bag.
18:15
Can you think of anything that I'm missing?
18:18
Anything that you would pack that I haven't put in here?
18:21
If you can think of something, let me know
18:23
down in the comments. Try and do it soon
18:25
because my flight's tomorrow!
18:28
And now it's homework time. I want you to
18:33
think about an upcoming trip that you've got and if you
18:37
haven't got a trip planned, I want you to imagine one.
18:41
Tell me about it down in the comments but also
18:44
tell me about what you're going to pack.
18:46
What are you going to put in your suitcase to take?
18:49
What are the essential and the non-essential
