00:00
Well hello and welcome to this English lesson. Today we're
00:04
going to be talking about hair. This might sound like a very
00:09
simple topic. But I was surprised when I was putting
00:13
the slides together on the topic. How many words I could
00:17
think of. How many words and phrases there are when it comes
00:20
to learning how to talk about hair. Yes hair the stuff that
00:24
is on most of our heads. Unless some of you are older and maybe
00:29
you are bald. Sometimes men lose their hair when they get
00:32
older. Uh and they don't have any. But this is an English
00:35
lesson about hair. Um I was surprised because Jen gave me
00:39
the idea. She said why don't you do a lesson on hair? And I
00:43
thought there would only be about fifteen words but I have
00:46
over 40 words and phrases to teach you this morning about
00:51
hair. So I think you will really enjoy this English
00:54
lesson. So hair. Hair is what you have up here on your head.
00:58
But interestingly enough we do have hair on other parts of our
01:01
body as well. I'm not going to go into all the details except
01:05
to say that if you're talking about hair on another part of
01:09
your body you just mentioned the body part and then say
01:12
hair. So people have ear hair. That's kind of a weird one.
01:17
People sometimes have nose hair. Especially older men.
01:20
Sometimes you have nose hair. We have armpit hair as well. We
01:24
have arm hair and leg hair. And this is a bit of an awkward
01:28
one. There's an area of the body a private area where you
01:31
have something called pubic hair. I'm not going to talk too
01:34
much about that. But we do have hair all over our body. Most of
01:39
this lesson is going to be about the hair that you have on
01:42
your head. So you can see this person here has nice hair. I
01:47
think I have nice hair as well. Although I do tend to keep my
01:50
hair pretty short. Some people have long hair. So when you
01:56
describe hair there's a lot of ways to describe it. And I
02:00
didn't want to spend too much time talking about it. You can
02:03
say that someone has long hair A lot of women have long hair.
02:06
Some men have long hair. Long hair is any hair I would say
02:10
that grows past your shoulders. So this person I would say
02:14
definitely has long hair. And the opposite of course would be
02:19
short hair. I would describe short hair as any hair that is
02:23
above the shoulder or to the shoulder. Um there's a lot of
02:26
other ways to describe hair. You can have curly hair where
02:30
you have like little ringlets. Uh you can have frizzy hair.
02:33
You can Have a lot of different styles of hair. But for the
02:37
most part people talk about hair in the sense of long hair
02:41
or short hair. I have short hair. I have really short hair.
02:46
Now there is other hair on the body as well. That's not part
02:49
of the head or the arm or the leg. Um and we call this a
02:55
beard. I think you're familiar with this. I am going over some
02:58
of the simpler vocabulary. So when you have hair on the lower
03:03
cheeks and on the chin we call this a beard. And then when you
03:08
have no hair here when you shave here and you just have
03:12
hair here we call this a goatee. So I used to have a
03:16
goatee a long time ago. I think it's called a goatee because if
03:20
I go and look at my goats some of the goats have a little bit
03:24
of hair growing right down here at the end of their chin. So I
03:27
wonder if the word goatee comes from the fact that it looks a
03:31
little bit like you have the same hair as a goat. Uh you
03:35
know what a goat is right? Like ma with horns and not a sheep a
03:40
goat and then you have what's called a mustache so let's zoom
03:45
in on this guy this is my mustache so this guy here has a
03:50
beard and he has a mustache a mustache would be hair that you
03:54
grow right above the lip right below the nose I like having a
03:59
mustache it just I don't know I've had a mustache and a bit
04:02
of a beard I don't grow my beard very long for quite a
04:05
number of years in fact I think a year ago I shaved my beard
04:10
and mustache and a lot of viewers didn't like it. They
04:13
said they didn't recognize me. And they said I looked much
04:16
better with facial hair. So that's the term I've just used
04:20
facial hair. When you have a beard or a goatee or a mustache
04:24
we call that facial hair. Hair that grows on your face. I get
04:32
my haircut I cut it myself and then Jen trims it for me. I use
04:37
a trimmer or clippers. But a lot of men go to what's called
04:41
a barber. A barber is a person who is trained to cut men's
04:45
hair in particular. And a barber often will have a barber
04:49
shop. So let's look at these two slides a bit more closely.
04:52
So we have this gentleman who is a barber. So someone is
04:57
sitting in the chair and he is getting a haircut from his
05:00
barber. And that bar Works in what's called a barbershop. A
05:04
place with chairs that go up and down and mirrors on the
05:08
wall so you can see the haircut as you get it. A woman would
05:13
more likely go to a hairdresser or a hairstylist. So a
05:17
hairdresser or hairstylist is someone who specializes in
05:21
cutting women's hair. Note by the way that a hairstylist
05:24
doesn't themselves need to be a man or woman. They can be
05:27
either. But a hairdresser or hairstylist is someone who cuts
05:31
women's hair. So, if I needed a haircut, I would go and see a
05:35
barber at a barbershop. If Jen needed a haircut, she would go
05:39
and see a hairdresser or hairstylist at a hair salon.
05:44
So, a hair salon looks a lot like a barbershop but it's
05:48
designed more for women to get their hair done. Sometimes at a
05:51
hair salon, you can also get your nails done and other
05:55
things. Maybe you can get a pedicure on your feet but a
05:58
hair salon is definitely where Jen would go if she needed get
06:02
a haircut. By the way Jen gets her haircut from a friend who
06:06
has a little hair salon in her basement. It's a little
06:09
business that she runs. So Jen goes to her friend's house to
06:12
get her haircut. Or to get a hair to get her hairstyled. So
06:18
generally the tools used by someone who cuts hair would be
06:21
a scissors and a comb. So often if I was to go get my haircut I
06:27
get it cut with clippers. But if I had a bit longer hair I
06:31
would have the person cut it with a scissors and a comb. Um
06:35
pretty stand tools for a barber or hairstylist to use. Um and
06:40
then also they might use a brush. So again some of the
06:44
basic English vocabulary here. When you have nice hair and you
06:49
want it to look really nice you might brush your hair with a
06:52
hair brush and a hair brush looks like that. So here's the
06:57
clippers that I was talking about. When I get my haircut I
07:02
have my own pair of clippers. You can call them hair trimmers
07:05
or hair clippers. I call them clippers. I think that's the
07:08
common name. I put a little spacer on the end. I put a
07:12
little attachment on the end so that it cuts my hair this long.
07:15
And then I buzz my hair off. I think we use the verb buzz in
07:20
English because that's the sound the clippers make. It's
07:23
like it makes a sound. So I buzz my hair off. But there's
07:28
parts I miss so then I sit down and Jen finishes it for me. She
07:33
trims around my ears and she trims my neck. But I use
07:37
clippers to cut my hair. There's other facial hair as
07:42
well. Actually this technically wouldn't be facial hair. I
07:44
think this would just be other examples of hair on the body.
07:49
We have eyebrows which are above our eyes. So you see that
07:53
this lady has dark eyebrows. And the arrow is pointing to
07:57
them and we also have eyelashes which are the little bits of
08:02
hair that grow right on the eyelid so this is your eyelid
08:06
when you close your eye and there's little hair little
08:09
eyelashes on the eyelid and then also on the bottom there's
08:14
little hair so those are your eyelashes so and if you wear
08:19
makeup you might put makeup on on your eyelashes as well I
08:24
don't know a lot about makeup. So when you get your hair done
08:30
a certain way. In English we often say I'm getting I'm
08:32
going to get my hair done tonight. Uh I'm going to go to
08:35
the barber and get my hair done or I'm going to go to the
08:37
hairstylist and get my hair done. We call it a hairstyle.
08:40
So the style of one's hair. How you have your hair. This guy's
08:45
hair. His hairstyle is he has his hair combed back. He's
08:49
probably using a little bit of hair gel to hold it there. So
08:52
that is his hairstyle. We don't use the word hairdo a lot
08:56
anymore. Like I don't say hey nice hairdo. Um but it's a word
09:01
you might hear if you watch an older TV show or an older
09:04
movie. Sometimes people are like oh I got my haircut. How
09:07
do you like my new hairdo? Um but now we would probably just
09:10
say hairstyle. Or we might even say I got my haircut. How do
09:14
you like it? How do you like my hair? It's a new style I'm
09:16
trying out. So the style of hair I have is called a buzz
09:20
cut. Um because you use clippers and because you say
09:24
you're buzzing your hair. This is called a buzz cut. It's a
09:27
very common hairstyle in the army. Or if you are police
09:32
officer. It's not a very common hairstyle for a teacher. But I
09:36
have a buzz cut and I've told this story before because when
09:39
I was younger I bought a motorcycle and when you wear a
09:43
helmet when you have lots of hair the helmet makes your hair
09:46
flat. So I finally just got my haircut really really short and
09:50
I liked it so much. I've kept it that way ever since. So a
09:55
buzz cut is when you have really short hair. So we're
09:58
going to talk a little bit about hair colouring. Um
10:01
sometimes people decide they don't like the colour of their
10:04
hair. And they decide that they want to dye their Hair. So we
10:08
use the verb to dye to talk about changing your hair
10:12
colour. But we also just generally use the the phrase
10:15
hair colouring you know. Um oh she's really into hair
10:18
colouring. Or she do you know anyone who does hair colouring?
10:21
You could also say do you know anyone who dyes hair? And
10:24
that's someone who would be able to put dye in your hair to
10:27
make it purple or green or or if you're old you might even
10:32
have your hair dyed to look more natural instead of grey. I
10:36
know one person and I won't mention any names who does
10:40
that. Someone who is the same age as me but he doesn't have
10:44
grey hair. He has nice brown hair as if he's 20 years old
10:48
but he's not twenty. He's fifty-two. It's a couple years
10:51
older than me. Anyways. Uh hair dye. There's something also
10:56
called highlights. So this woman probably has darker brown
11:00
hair and she has gotten some blonder highlights put in. So
11:04
when you have highlights put in your hair. This isn't something
11:07
Bob knows a lot about. I've never gotten highlights. But
11:10
it's when you change the colour of some of your hair to be a
11:13
lighter colour so that your hair has a nice look to it. So
11:17
you might go and get highlights. Um Generally, we
11:22
just call getting your haircut a haircut, It's very common to
11:28
go and get a haircut. It's common to say to someone hey
11:31
did you get a new haircut? Or did you get a haircut? It looks
11:34
great. Or your new haircut looks awesome. So we use it as
11:39
a noun. So you're going to get a haircut. But it's really an
11:42
action isn't it? Um so when you go to the barber or if you go
11:46
to the hairstylist you could say hey I'd like to get a
11:49
haircut today. Could you do it in the same style as Justin
11:54
Bieber. I really like his his hair. I'll So we talked about a
11:59
perm which is a short form for permanent. We never say
12:03
permanent though. And perms have been popular and then less
12:08
popular and popular and less popular and it seems to be they
12:11
might be getting popular again. A perm is when you have
12:15
straight hair and you go to a hair salon in order to have
12:19
your hair made more curly or wavy permanently. Now it's not
12:24
100% permanent. It only lasts for about four weeks or eight
12:28
weeks. Uh sometimes maybe three months depending on how fast
12:32
your hair grows. And I did say that when I was in university I
12:37
got a perm once. It was the style way back then in the late
12:41
eighties. Um men sometimes got perms to make their hair a
12:44
little curlier. I had longer hair and I had curly hair for a
12:48
bit. Um if you go back and look at bands in the eighties. If
12:54
you go and look at rock music bands in the eighties. A lot of
12:57
the guys in the bands had what would say as described as big
13:02
hair or curly hair and the way to get that was to get a perm.
13:05
So it was a little bit silly but hey that's what teenagers
13:09
do don't they? That's what young people do. They do silly
13:11
things sometimes. Sometimes people will put their hair up
13:16
in a bun. This is when you wrap the hair at the back of your
13:20
head. And then sometimes you'll put a pencil or you'll have
13:23
something to hold the hair in place. But you could also wrap
13:25
it without using anything. We would call that a bun and not
13:30
sure if popular anymore but for a while men were having their
13:34
hair up in a bun and we call that a man bun. So if you wear
13:38
your hair like this we would say you're wearing your hair in
13:41
a bun or you're putting your hair in a bun. If you're a man
13:45
we would call it a man bun. So you're a man with longer hair.
13:48
And you decide that you want to have the hair up behind you in
13:53
kind of a small knot. We would call that a bun. Um and yeah I
13:57
think it is from the word bun. Like when you eat a bun a bun
14:02
in English is a small piece of round bread. Like you eat a
14:06
hamburger on a Um and I think that's where the word comes
14:09
from. The word bun for sure.
14:13
Sometimes people will braid their hair. So braiding is
14:17
something that when I was a kid we would we would braid ropes.
14:23
We would get ropes. Because I lived on a farm we had a lot of
14:28
ropes from the hay. We would braid it. So it's when you take
14:32
three strands and you weave them together. Um people with
14:36
long hair will sometimes braid their hair. So it's both a verb
14:40
and a noun. So you could say my sister is going to braid my
14:44
hair. Or I like having a braid in my hair. Okay so you can use
14:48
it both ways. But it's when you take longer hair and you weave
14:52
it together in a certain pattern and it usually looks
14:55
something like that. Uh sometimes people with long hair
15:00
will wear a ponytail. So a ponytail I think it's obvious
15:04
where this word comes from. It's when you make your hair
15:07
almost look like the tail of a horse or a pony. By the way a
15:11
pony is it's not really a horse but I'm just going to say it's
15:15
a smaller horse. So sometimes men and women they'll put their
15:19
hair in a ponytail. So they'll grab their hair at the back.
15:22
They might put an elastic in their hair. Um I think in
15:25
English we have things called scrunchies. Don't quote me on
15:28
that because I don't have long hair. I don't have a ponytail.
15:32
But a ponytail Would be when you gather all your hair at the
15:36
back of your head and you kind of put usually an elastic or a
15:40
rubber band or something maybe a little fancier to hold it
15:43
there. Uh very common way for people with long hair to wear
15:48
their hair on a day when they don't want their hair you know
15:51
to bother them. So a part. I'm not sure if you can see the
15:57
arrow here. I put a little arrow on this picture. Some
16:00
people will part their hair. Some people part their hair
16:03
down the middle. Some people will part their hair on one
16:06
side or the other. When I was a lot younger and I had longer
16:11
hair a bit longer hair. I had a side part. I would part my hair
16:15
right here. That was where my hair naturally parted. You can
16:18
see it even does it a little bit now. Um some people part
16:22
their hair right in the middle. So they comb in both direct
16:26
away from the centre. This guy has his hair parted on the
16:30
side. So when you have your hair when you have a part in
16:33
your hair it means that you divide the hair kind of in a
16:36
straight line. Um because it looks kind of cool. I don't
16:40
part my hair now. There's not enough hair for me to part my
16:43
hair. Uh sometimes people want curlier hair just temporarily.
16:50
So they don't want to get a perm but maybe they're going
16:53
out for the evening and they're dressing up in fancy clothes
16:56
and they want their hair to look extra cool. So they might
16:59
put rollers in their hair. Rollers are hot and the heat
17:04
causes the hair to kind of form around the roller and stay a
17:08
little bit curly for a day. Um so maybe you're going to a
17:11
wedding. Maybe you're going to a prom. By the way I think
17:14
Brent from Speak English with this guy. Did an English lesson
17:17
about prom. Uh did you do that Brent? I think last week you
17:20
should check that out. Um but rollers you can put rollers in
17:24
your hair to temporarily give your hair a little bit more
17:28
curl. And if you want you can use a curling iron as well.
17:32
This is a similar thing but you just do one curl at a time. So
17:37
a curling iron is an appliance that you use in the bathroom
17:41
that you can wrap your hair in and the heat of the curling
17:45
iron will force your hair to be come a bit curly for about a
17:49
day. So it's kind of another interesting way to do your hair
17:54
if you're going to a special event. That's usually what we
17:57
say. I'm going to get my hair done. Um I'm going to a
18:00
wedding. I'm going to get my hair done. Jen will often get
18:03
her hair done if we go to one of our kid graduations or if we
18:08
go to a wedding or if we go to something special Jen will go
18:11
to her friends to get her hair done. So a little curlier. I
18:15
don't get my hair done. I I usually just get a haircut.
18:18
That's it. Hair dryer. Sometimes you wash your hair.
18:23
You have a shower or a bath and you wash your hair. And then
18:26
you'll use a hair dryer to dry your hair before you go out. I
18:30
don't use a hair dryer because my hair dries very quickly. But
18:34
if you were going somewhere important and you didn't want
18:36
your hair to be wet you might use a hair dryer to dry your
18:40
hair before you leave. Sometimes you will shave. Now
18:45
here is a picture of a man shaving his face. People
18:48
sometimes also shave their legs or they might shave their
18:51
armpits. It depends on what you like to do in order to feel
18:56
good about yourself. So in North America some women shave
18:59
their legs. Some women shave their armpits. Um men don't
19:04
generally shave their legs or armpits. Although I heard that
19:07
professional swimmers shave off most of their body I'm not I'm
19:14
saying things again I'm not an expert but sometimes you have
19:18
hair and you want to remove it. You do that by shaving. So I
19:22
shave right here and I shave down here but I don't shave
19:27
right here. When I shave I use a razor. So a razor is a small
19:33
thing that you use in order to shave. So when a razor when you
19:37
look at a razor it has sharp blades and you put some shaving
19:41
cream on and then you use a razor to shave. Some men will
19:45
use a shaver. An electric shaver. You might call it an
19:48
electric razor as well. But an electric shaver you would turn
19:52
on and it would go and you would just use that to shave
19:58
the hair off of your face. Um I tend to just use a razor
20:02
because I don't have a lot to shave. So, I just do that and I
20:06
use a clipper on my beard. Again, when you wash your hair,
20:11
you use shampoo. Some people just use soap but the vast
20:15
majority of the world when they wash their hair will use
20:19
shampoo. It's a special kind of liquid soap that you use for
20:24
your hair and you put it in your hair and then you rinse
20:27
your hair when you are done. So, you get your hair wet. You
20:31
shampoo in your hair and you kind of scrub your hair or you
20:36
what would you say? You wash your hair. That's what I would
20:38
say. And then you rinse your hair when you're done. Some
20:42
people like their hair to feel very soft and luxurious after
20:46
they wash it. So they might use what's called conditioner. So
20:51
they wash their hair with shampoo. And then immediately
20:54
they'll put conditioner in their hair. Conditioner makes
20:57
your hair have more moisture and feel more silky. I don't
21:02
use conditioner because I have really short hair. There's no
21:05
point. But when you put conditioner in your hair it can
21:09
make your hair just look nicer. You might use mousse if you
21:16
want your hair to stay a certain way. Sometimes the hair
21:20
that I have right here sticks up when it gets long and I
21:24
might just put a little bit of mousse in to make it flat like
21:28
the other side. So mousse is like a foam but it eventually
21:32
will hold the hair in a certain place. I don't use a lot of
21:36
mousse. Um you might use hair gel as well. Sometimes men want
21:41
to style their hair in a certain way and they'll use
21:45
something called hair gel in order to make the hair stay
21:48
that way. Um I think two of my sons use a little bit of hair
21:53
gel in their hair to make it look a certain way. They like
21:57
to have a certain look. So they use a little bit of hair gel to
22:01
accomplish it. Now I'm not sure how many people use hairspray.
22:08
It used to be very common in the eighties. I know my sisters
22:13
used a lot of hairspray in the eighties. Hair spray is
22:16
something you spray in your hair. Once your hair looks the
22:19
way you want it to look. If you spray hairspray it will hold it
22:23
that way. So hairspray is something that I'm not super
22:27
familiar with but it is something you use after you
22:30
style your hair. If you're going out and you don't want
22:34
your hair to move. You want it to stay the way it is. You
22:37
might put hairspray in. Sometimes people with long hair
22:42
will instead of a bun or a ponytail, they might just use a
22:46
hair clip. So they might have a big clip and there's many many
22:49
different styles and they'll use that to hold their hair in
22:53
place. And sometimes people will use bobby pins. I always
22:58
laugh because my name's Bob and I don't know why they're called
23:01
bobby pins. But these are little pins you can use. If you
23:05
put your hair up like this lady's hair she probably has
23:09
bobby pins holding her hair in place. And then she's probably
23:14
using hairspray to make sure it stays that way. But bobby pins
23:18
are little metal pins that you put in your hair just to hold
23:22
it certain ways. And sometimes I don't know why I picked a
23:27
picture of a dog. Sometimes people don't have hair for
23:31
medical reasons. Sometimes people don't like their hair.
23:35
Sometimes people just want to look different for an evening
23:38
and they might then wear a wig. So a wig is of course either
23:42
made from actual hair or it might be made from fake hair.
23:46
But it's something that you wear in order to look like you
23:50
have a different hairstyle. Sometimes people wear wigs like
23:54
on Halloween. If you're dressing up you might wear a
23:57
wig as well to look like someone else. But as mentioned
24:01
in the chat earlier sometimes even for medical reasons people
24:05
will wear a wig. If you're going through chemo if you're
24:08
going through a treatment where your hair is going to fall out
24:10
you decide to just wear a wig for a few months while you're
24:13
going through that treatment. So again a wig is I guess fake
24:18
hair that you put on. And then men sometimes go bald. So this
24:24
gentleman here in the bottom corner he is going bald. So he
24:27
has decided to wear a toupee. I have to be honest. I don't know
24:31
if we use this word anymore and I don't know if very many men
24:36
wear topes in North America anymore. I have a feeling it's
24:40
not as popular as it was in the seventies and maybe in the
24:43
eighties. But a toupe is like a partial wig for a man who's
24:49
going bald. Um so this man decided he did not like being
24:53
bald. He is going to wear a toupee and make it look like he
24:57
has lots and lots of hair.
